Interior designers are involved in planning the interior spaces of almost all buildings,
including offices, airport terminals, theaters, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels,
schools, hospitals and private residences. Designers’ jobs are important and essential
to construction because they help increase productivity, attract clientele and increase
the building’s market value.

Students also have the option of earning a Certificate of Specialization (CS) in Interior
Design Professional Certificate and/or in Kitchen and Bath Design.

About the Program

The Interior Design program at St. Louis Community College-Meramec is a 66-credit
hour program that prepares students for careers in interior design or transfer to
a four-year institution. The curriculum emphasizes a strong foundation in visual art
skills, architecture and space planning. Utilizing these foundations students develop
creative projects using a systematic approach to the design processes.

Completion of the Interior Design program requires two full academic years. Students
can also enter the program as part-time students and evening classes are offered as
well.

About the Certificate of Specialization

This certificate program is designed for graduates of two-year interior design programs
to meet the educational standards required to become a certified professional interior
designer. The coursework will address the following content areas of the national
certification requirements: building systems, construction standards, design application
and specifications and building and life safety codes. The program will also provide
students with the advanced research, graphic and computer-aided design skills to successfully
apply both the theoretical and practical knowledge required for employment as a professional
interior designer.

Since the state of Missouri limits the number of credit hours an AAS degree program
can offer and STLCC does not offer four-year degrees, we created the Certificate of
Specialization in Interior Design to prepare students to take the National Council
for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) Interior Design Fundamentals Exam (IDFX)
which requires 60-credit hours of interior design coursework before the exam can be
taken. This program is offered entirely online to provide educational opportunities
for working designers and potential from outside the region that wish to become professional
interior designers.
